When Failure holds your hand - Poetry

The shadow that stares back at me in the mirror

Failure

The art of the mind that didn’t work out the way we planned

A dark energy that sometimes holds my hand

Failure

A voice that whispers in my ear

“you’re going nowhere, no point trying here”

Failure

A feeling that paralysed my every move

A dark figure in the corner of the room

Failure

Feeling stuck as the world moves on

Feeling unseen in all the unknown

Failure

A character created in my mind

A story

A place

for only me to find.

At some point in our lives most of us have thought about the word ‘failure’. A word that carries so much weight and meaning. A word that haunts us in the dead of the night and as we catch a glimpse of ourselves in the mirror. A word that is buried deep in our subconscious because society has made us believe that it’s an important part of our vocabulary. I like to think that the idea of failure doesn’t exist. That instead, the word ‘lesson’ takes its place. However, that has not stopped me from thinking about this word almost everyday of my life.

What is failure? I ask myself.

The feeling of going nowhere is heavy and sticks to me like concrete.

Failure has a different meaning for everyone, because what others see as a failure for themselves may be someone else's success.

Failure for many of us is the impatience of not being where we want to be in life, in this particular moment. We may not have that dream job yet, a successful relationship, kids, the house, not enough money… the list could go on. It could also be neglecting a task we wanted to get done in that day, going back on our own word or making a mistake in an area of our lives. It’s a very self loathing feeling that can spiral us into the unknown darkness of our thoughts. We may feel as though we haven’t made it to our final destination yet or completed the next level in this game called life. We put such high expectations on ourselves that we forget to live in the moment and appreciate how far we have come. To realise that where we are now, in this very moment, leads us to where we want to be.

Rewriting a failure into a lesson is what allows us to grow, change and evolve. Without those challenges in life we wouldn’t know what accomplishments look like. We wouldn’t know the feeling of success.

I know it doesn’t stop us from thinking about the word failure but it can help make the emotion of the word less heavy to carry.

Failure is just another character in our human experience, one we can rewrite at any moment.
